RIT Libraries Strategic Plan

Increase Library Hours of Service

The Library proposes to increase hours of operation and provide late night access to the entire first floor to provide study space for students and access to our resources.

Currently, Sunday through Thursday, the Library closes at midnight, with access to the after hours room overnight. We propose to keep the first floor of the Library open until 3 am. Additionally, the Library now opens at 11 am on Saturday and Sunday and the proposal is to open one hour earlier on those days.

Data shows that building usage during break weeks continues to decrease. However, we will monitor this item to make the necessary adjustments.

Some of the elements of the RIT Strategic Plan addressed by this goal include:

Objective C4.2: Dedicated research space and shared collaborative spaces should be allocated for cross-disciplinary interaction and scholarly engagement by faculty, students, and staff. Many recent increases in university space allocated broadly to student collaborations, socialization and interaction have reaped obvious and immediate benefits.

Objective B8.2: RIT will inventory its graduate support services to ensure adequacy and availability for an expanded student population.

I would like to see the library open later during break weeks. I don't even get out of work until after 5 p.m., so picking up a book or video from the library becomes impossible when it's already closed by 4:30 p.m.

I love the idea of the library opening earlier on Saturdays and Sundays. Many students utilize library services on the weekends, so earlier access will be much appreciated.

Given the large numbers of non-traditional students at RIT, I think it makes sense to open earlier on Saturdays and Sundays. Part-timers, working people and EMBA students need to maximize available hours.

I'd like to see longer hours for the Archives and Cary Collection.

I am glad that the Library is expanding their hours of operation as well as expanding their services by giving students access to the first floor. The computers on the second floor are better than the first floor though. If they switch the computers, openning the first floor to students durin g the extended hour would be more beneficial to the patrons.
