RIT Libraries Strategic Plan

Expand RIT Digital Media Library

The Library will continue its efforts to solicit scholarly content and promote use of the RIT Digital Media Library.

Scholarly activity, as outlined in President Simone’s strategic plan, is a strenuous requirement that involves faculty’s personal scholarship, as well as integrating scholarship into students’ educational activities. The RIT DML has the potential to house and showcase all of RIT’s scholarly & educational materials, including text documents, images, audio, and video, that are created by faculty, students, and staff.

The RIT Digital Media Library (DML) is a virtual site that captures, distributes, preserves, and showcases RIT's digital scholarship posted by faculty, students and staff. Currently, articles, working papers, preprints, technical reports, conference papers, theses, projects, and other text documents are archived and listed by colleges and by format.

In order to be inclusive of all RIT scholarly activity, the DML has hardware and staff needs, such as image, audio and video software, a server with appropriate storage capacity, and the ability to fill the position of a Digital Media Specialist.

Some of the elements of the RIT Strategic Plan addressed by this goal include:

Goal C1: RIT will achieve an Institute-wide shared understanding of scholarship and its expectations entailing documentation, dissemination, and peer review.

Goal C4: RIT will allocate resources to support scholarly activity, with particular attention to engaging students, adjusting workloads, and reducing barriers to cross-college collaboration in scholarship.

This is a worthy project, indeed. I attended a luncheon discussion about it last year, and concur that we should take advantage of current technologies to showcase the varied and copious scholarly endeavors of RIT faculty, staff, and students. Perhaps submissions to the Kearse Awards, the COLA Undergraduate Research Conference, and other such annual occasions for scholarship could be automatically included in the database.
