RIT Libraries Strategic Plan
Expand the University Press
The Library currently operates as the RIT nexus for the collection, storage, and delivery of scholarly information in print or in digital form. A University Press will add to these functions, by acting as a center for the production and dissemination of information, especially scholarly work generated by RIT faculty.
A model for the University Press has already been established in the Library, mainly the RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press. Its present activities however are limited by funding constraints. A fully implemented University Press would publish on subjects that draw not only from RIT’s technological and scientific expertise, but also those that highlight diverse themes on the arts, literature, and the University’s varied constituencies that make the culture at RIT vibrant.
A University Press will become the Library’s most dynamic collection: a collection of ideas that could be disseminated through the collaborations of Library staff, student work, and the intellectual contributions of faculty.
This goal addresses the following elements of the RIT Strategic Plan:
Objective C1.1: … Scholarship requires documentation of activities, public dissemination and peer review….Objective C2.1: … This will elevate and establish the appropriate prominence for scholarship, provide direct encouragement and leadership, provide monitoring, reporting, and oversight functions, and foster cross-disciplinary and inter-college scholarly alliances.
