SOURCES FOR LOCATING VIDEOS AND OTHER MEDIA
The following is an annotated list of resources available for locating videos
and other media and their reviews. Once you have identified an item you would
like to use as part of your RIT classroom presentation, contact the Educational
Technology Center's (ETC), Media
Resource Center (MRC) on the A-level of the Library (Bldg 5). A Media/Teleconference
Specialist at (716) 475-2015 will work with you to locate the media and schedule
it for your class use.
Using the Library's Video Catalog,
you can search for all video materials located in either RIT Library, the
Media Resource Center or NTID's Eductional Technology Resource Room (ETRR).
You can also do a keyword search from the Library's Main Catalog (Einstein)
to locate non-print materials.
- Enter in your keywords
- In the Location menu, select ETC Media Resource Center or ETRR at
NTID.
- Call Number and Availability Status provided
- Check citation to determine the type of media
- Search by Actor, Director (limited bibliographic information given)
To locate captioned RIT owned videos, check the captioned
video listing.
To locate DVD's, 14 Day Books, Audio Books and Tapes, and other multi-media
materials, view the Library's Leisure
Materials.
ADDITIONAL ELECTRONIC SOURCES FOR LOCATING VIDEOS AND OTHER MEDIA
Using WorldCat (Will show holdings of libraries all over the country,
many of which will lend their materials through Inter-Library Loan)
To find a video, film, slides, sound recording, etc.:
- From the RIT Library Home Page, select Research
Databases.
- Under the alphabetical listing of databases,
- Choose WorldCat
- Choose FirstSearch
- Select a search strategy - subject, title or author - choose type
of search and type in term(s)
- Choose Advanced Search
For example, search on "subject" - total quality management
search on "title" - gone with the wind
search on "author" - spike lee
- Choose "Type" (Media) for limiting format
- You can further limit by year and language

To find ROARing Cat on the web:
From the RIT Library Home Page select Research
Databases.
The electronic databases are listed alphabetically on the left under Select
and Search a Database.
Scroll down to ROARing Cat and
select.
To search in ROARing Cat:
Options for Basic or Advanced Search
Scroll down to search boxes.
Enter search term (title, director, actor, producer) in box adjacent to "Find
Anything" and click on "Find Anything". (Searches the entire catalog
for that search term.)
Once results are shown, scroll through list and look for "videorecording" following
the entry.
ELECTRONIC REVIEWING SOURCES OF VIDEOS AND OTHER MEDIA:
Locate these databases from the RIT Library Home Page. Go to Research
Databases and then scroll through the alphabetical list of databases.
Using WilsonSelect will show
citations to media reviews in journals and tell whether RIT owns the journals.
To search in WilsonSelect:
- Do a subject, title, or word search
- Other options include year limiter
- Include one of these phrases "motion picture review", "videotape
review", or "television program review"
Using Lexis/Nexis
will show movie and video reviews from numerous news sources.
To search in Lexis/Nexis:
- Type "keyword" in box
- Type additional term for narrowing search (ex: "movie review")
- Choose source "Book, movie, music, & play reviews",
"Entertainment news", or "Sports news"
- Choose Limiter of date

Comprehensive source of entertainment and educational videos. Volume 1 (entertaiment)
describes domestic and foreign feature films, athletic and cultural events,
made for television or video features, children's programming, etc. Volumes
2 and 3 (educational and special interest) describe documentaries, sports, educational
and other special interest programming. Entries are listed alphabetically by
title; with additional cross-indexes (cast/director, genre, series, Spanish-language,
Closed-caption, etc.).
