Deaf Autobiography or Biography Videos, DVDs and CDs

Videos are located on the 3rd and 4th floors and may be borrowed for up to 3 weeks. There are tvs, vcrs and captioning available at MRC, basement of the library. Students may view videos there. Ted Supalla brings the viewer Charles Krauel's work, combined with an interview with the deaf filmmaker. The rare film footage of Krauel's work spans over a period of 50 years

This film anthology showcases the films shot and edited by Deaf film pioneer Charles Krauel as he experimented with the 16mm format. Several segments are highlights of Deaf events and social gatherings between 1925 and 1940. It gives the modern day viewer a glimpse of Deaf social life during those years. The original Krauel 16mm masters were restored by preservationist David H. Pierce and transferred to broadcast video for the benefit of future generations interested in Deaf heritage




Passion of Words Turning into Action: A Black Deaf Filmmaker's Journey. DVD. Deaf Vision Filmworks, 2004. 120 mins.Color/Signed/Captioned. (3rd floor,  PN1998.3.B79 P37 2004).
Includes interviews, student films, behind the scenes productions, personal video diaries about being a struggling filmmaker, production experiences, and professional production clips. Accompanied by DVD, "Behind the scenes: Somalia," 14:09 minutes, with music, subtitled. The accompanying DVD provides a look at the production of Jade's first feature film, "Somalia," the story of an African-American Deaf woman who falls in love with a musician

Tape 8A: Gil Eastman (40 mins).
Using ASL, Emmy award winner Gilbert Eastman shares his personal frustrations and inspiring triumphs. He demonstrates his artistry in two performances of music in sign language: The National Anthem and an original song called Winners.

Tape 8F: Dennis Schemenauer (29 mins)
Expressive and articulate in ASL, Dennis came from a family with generations of involvement in the Deaf culture. He tells about his life and shares Deaf history. On Sept. 28, 1990, this renowned ASL teacher died of AIDS.

Tape 8G: Patrick Graybill (30 mins)
Patrick is a Deaf storyteller who has delighted audiences all over the world. We take an intimate look into his multi-gifted life and watch him perform a children's fable, "The Stork and the Fox.l.

Tape 8H: Howie Seago (38 mins)
Howie became famous when he acted in the TV series, "Star Trek: The Next Generation." He tells his life story and performs an ASL number story.

Nathie Marbury tells her story: the 16th of 17 children, born into a family not believing in education, goes on to earn three college degrees and late in life finds her identity as a black, deaf woman.

Chronicles the life of a pioneer, deaf playwright and actor Bruce Hlibok, who challenged audiences while provoking and creating controversy with his work






Playing from the Heart. Videocassette. San Francisco, CA : Globalstage Productions, 1998. 98 mins. Color/Voiced/Captioned. (3rd floor, PN1995.9.D35 P539 1998).
Story of the young life of famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie who began to lose her hearing at the age of eight, performed by the Polka Children's Theatre of Wimbledon, England. Includes a brief look at London, several percussion performances, and an interview with Evelyn Glennie.

Dramatised presentation in which Patrick Graybill remembers the joys and values of growing up attending a residential school

ASL Linguist and Advocate

Using ASL, renowned Deaf spokeswoman and educator MJ Bienvenu shares touching glimpses into her family background and recaptures the childhood experiences that led to the successful woman she is today.

Engineer

Alfred discusses his training in hearing schools and his professional training in engineering, social sciences, disability awareness and communication devices that aid the deaf and hard of hearing. He shares an inspiring story of overcoming discriminatory practices for hiring mechanical engineers within the U.S. government with the help of LBJ.

Artists

Using ASL, Paul tells about going to a residential school, having assistance with interpreters, his training as an artist, going to graduate school at Penn State and becoming a college art teacher to both hearing and Deaf students.

Gives a brief biography of John Brewster Jr., itinerant painter in Maine, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and discusses his education as a deaf person.

Librarian

Video created for and shown at a memorial tribute for Shirley Panara, held at the Panara Theater, National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, on September 12, 2003. She was the first Deaf librarian at the Library of Congress, and later became the librarian at the Rochester School for the Deaf, Rochester, N.Y.
She founded the Eastern Deaf Women's Bowling Association, was a member of Deaf Women of Rochester, and was a long-time supporter of NTID's theatre arts department.
