Where We Are, How We Got Here, Where We're Going
RIT Library is providing wider access to serial/journal/periodical
resources than ever before. Despite the budgetary need over the past
six years to eliminate a number of "print" subscriptions (see Serials
Crisis), the availability at RIT Library of this type of resource is
greater now than in previous years.
Historically, libraries have provided periodical information in the
previously most prevalent format, i.e. paper. This paradox of actually
having more access even though we have fewer print subscriptions has
been possible due to several factors. Among these are RIT Library's
commitment to expanding our access to resources via selective
subscriptions to electronic full-text database packages, journal
table-of-contents alert programs, and increasingly efficient
Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery services.
RIT Library has made a conscious effort to take advantage of the
shift in publishing from paper to digital formats. As journal inflation
continues to exceed library budget increases in most major educational
institutions, creative solutions to serials access are crucial. Our
joining with other interested academic libraries to enable consortial
purchasing of database packages has been instrumental in keeping this
expanding avenue within our financial reach.
Our goal at RIT Library has been and continues to be, to provide needed
information through the most cost-effective means, and by leveraging cutting-edge
technology, to allow increased access remotely at our users' desk-tops. As
the information industry has evolved into the 21st century and the balance of
available information products shifts from primarily print to largely electronic
formats, RIT Library is poised to take full advantage of this phenomena
to enhance our users' research capabilities.
