History and Description of the Art Collection
The RIT Library Art Collection numbers 152 works executed in a great variety
of
media. Paintings, sculpture, prints of all types, posters, ceramics, glass
objects, jewelry, textiles, and even stills from multimedia programs are included
in the collection.
Most of the works are displayed in the public and office spaces of RIT Library and the Educational Technology Center. Pieces in storage or in library
staff
offices may be viewed by contacting the Art and Photography Librarian.
All but nine items in the RIT Library Art Collection were acquired
through the library's purchase prize program.
The library has awarded purchase prizes to graduate students of the School of
Art and Design and the School for American Crafts annually since 1972. Works are
selected from the MFA Thesis Exhibitions by a jury of three: two faculty members
from the School of Art and Design and the School for American Crafts and the Art
and Photography Librarian. Purchase prize committees are listed in the
last section of this document.
Eighty-one works from other RIT Library collections are also
on display in the building and listed in the catalog below. These include
the selections from library's
Poster Collection,
Photo Purchase Prize Collection,
RIT Archives,
Lester Beall Collection,
and George Giusti Collection.
Other works in these collections may be examined by library visitors in the
Archives and Special Collections Reading Room.
