BASIC GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE COMMUNITY SERVICE OPTIONS

1. You should confirm with your instructor that the Community Service Option will satisfy requirements for your specific section of Senior Seminar. This option does not replace all class assignments or attendance. Discuss class requirements with your instructor.

2. In order to meet the minimum requirements, you must perform a minimum of 16 hours of service. This will usually mean you will work a minimum of 2 hours per week. However, specific projects may require adjustment to this per week minimum. The needs and requirements of the organization you are working with will determine your specific schedule.

3. You may perform community service work with any appropriate agency or organization. However, it is important you secure an agreement from the agency that they will provide supervision and a confirmation of hours worked. If you are uncertain about an agency or a community service assignment, check with your instructor.

4. You must submit a GREEN Community Service form to your instructor no later than the end of the third week of the quarter. The form contains information about the planned community service work and agency verification that arrangements have been made.

5. For every week worked, you must secure the initials of your agency supervisor overseeing your work on the ORANGE Community Service form.

6. At the end of the quarter, agency supervisors will be asked to provide a brief written evaluation of your work on the ORANGE Community Service form.

7. The ORANGE Community Service form is to be submitted to your Senior Seminar Instructor who may use the evaluation in determining your course grade.

Unless otherwise instructed by your professor, you must identify your own community service assignment. You can obtain information about participating organizations by contacting:

RIT Student Volunteer Center (SVC)
Student Alumni Union, Room 2150
(716) 475-6065 v/TTY
Email: tmh9861@rit.edu
www.rit.edu/SVC

Through the SVC website, you can obtain information on a variety of community service opportunities. The SVC staff can assist you with making a community service decision; however, you must contact your selected organization and make your own arrangements for what you will be doing and your work schedule.

COMMUNITY SERVICE FORMS CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE STUDENT SERVICES OFFICE, COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS 6-2220.
